Frequently Asked Questions❓ — Postnatal Support South London

Q1. What does a postnatal doula do?

Answer:
A postnatal doula provides practical, emotional, and informational support to families after birth. Jay Doula’s postnatal support includes newborn care, breastfeeding guidance, overnight visits, emotional support, and help establishing early rhythms, all delivered with the expertise of a Senior Registered Midwife.

Q2. How is a postnatal doula different from a midwife or health visitor?

Answer:
NHS midwives and health visitors provide essential care but have limited time per family. A postnatal doula offers dedicated one-to-one support in your home for as long as you need. My background as both a Senior Registered Midwife and Postnatal Doula means you benefit from deep clinical knowledge alongside warm, personalised care.

Q3. Do you offer overnight postnatal support?

Answer:
Yes, overnight postnatal visits are available under both the Enhanced and Early Days/Weeks packages. Night visits are usually available at an hourly rate. Overnight support can be invaluable in those first weeks, giving you the rest you need while your baby is in experienced, qualified hands.

Q4. How is your overnight support different from a night nanny or maternity nurse?

Answer:
Jay Doula’s overnight postnatal support covers similar ground to a night nanny or maternity nurse — settling your baby, feeding support, and giving you the rest you desperately need — but with one key difference: I am a Senior Registered Midwife. This means my overnight care comes with a depth of clinical knowledge and expertise that goes beyond standard night nanny or maternity nurse services. Whether you are navigating breastfeeding challenges, recovering from a difficult birth, or simply feeling overwhelmed in those early weeks, I bring both hands-on holistic care and qualified medical insight to every overnight visit across South London.

Q5. Do you offer breastfeeding support?

Answer:
Yes, breastfeeding and infant feeding support is a core part of my postnatal care. As a Senior Registered Midwife, I have extensive clinical experience helping with latch, positioning, attachment, feeding concerns like mastitis, and building confidence; whether you are breastfeeding, chestfeeding, combination feeding, or bottle feeding.

Q6. When should I hire a postnatal doula?

Answer:
Many families arrange postnatal doula support during the second or third trimester. However I understand the need for support can arise unexpectedly, so do not hesitate to get in touch even after your baby has arrived. Where possible, I will accommodate last-minute requests.

Q7. Where do you offer postnatal doula support in South London?

Answer:
I offer postnatal doula support at home across South London, including Sutton, Merton, Croydon, Lambeth, Southwark, Lewisham, Wimbledon and surrounding areas as well as throughout London, depending on availability. Online postnatal support is also available for families further afield across the UK.

Q8. How many hours of postnatal support will I need?

Answer:
This varies depending on your circumstances, support network, birth experience, and feeding journey. Some families benefit from a few focused visits in the first days; others value ongoing weekly support for several weeks. I am happy to discuss your needs during a free no-obligation chat.

Q9. How much does postnatal doula support cost?

Answer:
The Enhanced & Early Days package is offered at a day and night rate. The Encouraging Early Weeks package is available at a lower hourly rate for day and night. Extended support is bespoke so please get in touch to discuss your needs and budget.
